Small Hill, Big Story

A Pioneer in Snowmaking & Downhill Fun
Blue Hills Ski Area was one of the first ski areas in New England to adopt artificial snowmaking. In the early 1960s, Larchmont Engineering—on lease from the MDC—installed snowmaking on both the main slope and beginner area, using Blue Hills as a testing ground for new designs in hose, gun, and nozzle systems. This innovation revolutionized regional skiing, enabling reliable winter conditions and influencing other mountains.

Blue Hills

Our Local Impact

Why Blue Hills Matters
Trailblazers in technology: among the first to prove artificial snowmaking works—even at modest elevations.
Cultivators of ski talent: home to Olympic-level instructors and the origin point for extreme ski legends.
Community cornerstone: a reliable, welcoming place for families, racers, and ski enthusiasts since the 1930s.
From snowmaking breakthroughs and Olympic pioneers to mountain-making Egan brothers and modern upgrades, Blue Hills lives up to its name.
Our Small Hill Has a Big Story.

Penny Pitou & Egon Zimmerman

Olympic medalist Penny Pitou (1960 downhill silver) was named ski school director at Blue Hills around 1960, working alongside her then-husband Egon Zimmermann. Under their guidance, ski instruction at Blue Hills flourished—teaching thousands of new skiers and shaping early ski culture in the Boston area.

Egan Brothers

Dan and John Egan, raised in nearby Milton, made their first turns on Blue Hills’ slopes. They formed the Milton High ski team, cutting their teeth on Big Blue before going on to become groundbreaking extreme skiers, featured in Warren Miller films and inducted into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2016 .
During a 2023 ceremony, Blue Hills unveiled a plaque honoring the Egan brothers, commemorating the hill that first launched their storied skiing careers .

A New Era

In August 2024, Geoff Homer took the helm and immediately elevated the ski area’s offerings:
These investments bring Blue Hills fully into the 21st-century ski landscape while preserving its local charm.
